Frequently asked questions
General questions about working with Heritage and Routes. For festival-specific or journey-specific questions, see the FAQ on each programme page.
How is Heritage and Routes different from other West African operators?
We are based in Benin, not in London or New York. Our founder Fèmi lives in Cotonou. Our coordinator network is built across the four countries we operate in. We work with traditional councils, university scholars, and religious authorities directly. Our protocols are negotiated, not improvised. Our group sizes are small. Our prices reflect that.
How are your prices structured?
We do not publish per-person prices. Every journey is quoted to the group based on size, dates, accommodation tier, and degree of customisation. We respond to discovery-call requests within 48 hours with a written proposal.
Do you work with travel agents and tour operators?
Yes. We have ongoing B2B relationships with Smithsonian Journeys, Road Scholar, and several boutique operators. We can host private groups under your branding, or we can co-host. Initial conversation by email.
Can I customise an existing programme?
Yes. The Slave Coast 12-day journey and the Voyage Vodun 7-day are templates — most travellers extend or compress them based on dates available. The Custom 10-day is built from scratch for your group.
What is your cancellation policy?
Detailed in the written proposal. Generally: full refund minus deposit if cancelled more than 90 days before departure; sliding scale closer in. We carry full travel insurance recommendations in the pre-trip pack.
Do you accommodate accessibility needs?
Where we can. Most of our journeys are Physical Activity Level 2 or 3 (see the dedicated page). For travellers with specific mobility considerations, raise this at first contact — we adjust pacing, accommodation, and route where feasible.
Do you work in languages other than English and French?
On-the-ground interpretation is provided in Fon, Yoruba, Goun, Ewe, Twi, and Kabyè when relevant. Briefings are in English or French. We can coordinate Spanish, Portuguese or German escorts for groups with that need (advance notice required).
How far in advance should I book?
For festival journeys: 4–6 months minimum, often 9–12 months for PANAFEST and Vodun Days. For year-round programmes: 8–12 weeks works. Festival-specific accommodation fills early.
