The essential walk: the Slave Route of Ouidah, 4 km and ten stations to the Door of No Return.
Who you are actually travelling with
Heritage and Routes is not a Western operator working through a local supplier. The company is registered in Cotonou and its team works from there, on the coast this journey follows. Our founder, Oluwafemi Kochoni — Fèmi — lives here. He is a certified cultural and memorial tourism guide and holds a degree in African and Diaspora Studies from the Université d’Abomey-Calavi.
Benin is home. The Slave Route at Ouidah, the royal palaces of Abomey and the Vodun convents of the south are places we return to across the year, not a destination we fly into. That is why our accounts of them are first-hand, and why they get corrected when the ground changes.
In Benin we work with two named local partners: Toura and Muska+ Consulting. We name them because a partner you can name is a partner you actually work with.
